Pomegranate Storage
The pomegranate (Punicaceae family) was first grown in the region around the Mediterranean. Pomegranate cultivation has spread from its inception to the present, especially in the Middle East, thanks to the new varieties' hardy, saline-resistant and more drought-tolerant nature. Known pomegranate varieties are: Wonderful (California and Israel), Mollar and Tendral (Spain), Schahvar and Robab (Iran), Hicaznar and Beynar (Turkey), Zehri and Gabsi (Tunisia).
Pomegranate Harvest
The pomegranate harvest is done when the pomegranates reach full maturity, the right size and the right color (depending on the variety).
KA / Pomegranate Storage
When stored in cold stores equipped with Controlled Atmosphere conditions, the freshness of the pomegranate is considerably longer. Optimum storage conditions for pomegranate are 3% O2 + 6% CO2. Storage under 2% O2 conditions reduces the risk of low temperature deterioration if the temperature is kept at 5°C or lower.
Pomegranate can be stored up to 2 months at 5°C. For longer storage, the temperature should be 7.2°C to prevent frost damage.
Pomegranate is very sensitive to moisture loss. Storage and waxing in cases reduces moisture loss. The optimum R.V. for pomegranate is 90-95%.

Optimum Storage Conditions For Pomegranate
Optimum storage conditions for pomegranates depend on the variety, harvest time, regions, orchard location and harvest conditions. While this recommendation states general scientifically recommended storage conditions, it is not specific to a particular region or orchard. For this reason, it is for the purpose of providing examples only and no definite information can be deduced from this information. Always consult a local university or research organization for further advice.
